Baking and Bonding With My Grandma

Baking has always been a tradition in our family, but it became extra special to me when I started baking with my grandma, who is battling dementia.

It began a few years ago when I noticed Grandma was becoming increasingly forgetful. Simple tasks seemed challenging, and conversations would loop back on themselves. It was a hard realization to come to terms with.

In an effort to help her stay active and engaged, I suggested we bake together. Baking had always been one of her passions, and I hoped that it would bring her comfort and joy. I didn’t know at the time, but would also bring us closer.

We have spent months making all of our family's favorite recipes, and me getting schooled on proper baking techniques along the way. As we work, Grandma shares stories—tales of her childhood, memories with Grandpa, and the lessons she had learned over the years. It is like uncovering little hidden treasures, pieces of her life that I had never known before.

Despite her struggles with dementia, Grandma is still a source of love, wisdom, and support. She may not remember what she had for breakfast this morning, but she never fails to offer sage advice or a hug when I need it most.

I’ve started jotting down Grandma's recipes in a little notebook as a way to preserve her legacy. Each recipe is a testament to her creativity and resourcefulness in the kitchen, and I know that sharing them with my family will be a meaningful way to honor her.

Baking with Grandma has taught me so much more than just how to make the perfect pie crust or chocolate chip cookies. It has shown me the power of love, resilience, and the importance of cherishing every moment we have together. As her memory continues to fade, I am grateful for these precious moments we share in the kitchen.
