How We Built A Social Circle With Games

A few years ago, my husband and I found ourselves stuck in a weekly routine of work, kids, and not a lot of fun. We both loved board games when we were dating, but after having kids, who were too young for that kind of thing, our games were in a cabinet gathering dust. Our older son had had a few playdates with a buddy from daycare, and the parents seemed really nice but we didn’t know them that well. There was another family in our son’s class we wanted to get to know too.

On a total whim, we organized a playdate at our house for the kids and suggested a game night for us adults. We were honestly a little nervous— we didn’t know these people that well, but I hoped an activity would keep the conversation going.

That first day we played A Ticket to Ride, one that is simple enough but still engaging. We ended up having the best time. Laughter, friendly banter, and the clinking of game pieces filled the room as we embarked on our railroad-building adventures. Despite the initial awkwardness of getting to know each other, the game helped us all relax and have fun. Our kids had a great time playing together too, so we decided to do it again a few weeks later.

Eventually, game night became a regular fixture in our lives, those initial nerves faded away, replaced by friendship and fun. We played all sorts of different games but gravitated to a few favorites.

Those couples became our closest friends. Every week now, we share meals, swap stories, and support each other through life's challenges. Our children, too, formed their own tight-knit group, creating lasting friendships that mirrored our own.

Now, game night isn't just a weekly event; it's a tradition that we anticipate and rely on. It's a time when we can set aside our worries and immerse ourselves in the joy of play and fun. Our game nights have become the highlight of our week, filling our home with laughter and love.

Looking back, I'm grateful that we pushed past our initial nerves and took a chance to invite new faces into our lives. Through game night, we've created a vibrant social circle that has brought happiness and support into our lives. I encourage you to take that leap of faith and make plans with new acquaintances—you never know the lifelong friendships that may come from it.
