Bonding Through Hockey

My return to hockey was ignited by my son's newfound interest in the sport. It's been an exciting journey that's brought me closer to him than ever.

When my son first expressed his interest in hockey, I was intrigued. As a kid, I was passionate about the game, spending hours on the ice, honing my skills and enjoying every moment. But as life moved forward and responsibilities grew, hockey drifted into the background, becoming a memory instead of an active part of my life.

Seeing the sparkle in my son's eyes as he talked about his dreams of scoring goals and gliding across the ice reignited something in me. I realized that I missed the game – the adrenaline rush, the camaraderie with teammates, and sheer joy of being on the ice.

So, I pulled my old gear down from the attic and took my son to the rink. And you know what? It felt like coming home. The familiar sound of blades slicing through the ice, the satisfying thud of a puck hitting the back of the net – it all came flooding back, filling me with a sense of nostalgia.

I showed my son the basics and over time we got more and more into it. Watching him grow and develop his skills, and witnessing his determination and passion for the game – it's been an absolute privilege to be by his side every step of the way. When his team needed a new assistant coach, I couldn’t say no.

We also practice together once a week and that has become our special time. It’s a chance to connect and share something we both love. Some of our most special moments have been on the way to or from the rink, or while grabbing burgers after a fun practice.

I’ve rediscovered my love for hockey through my son's eyes. It’s brought us closer together as he heads into his teenage years, and I can only hope this is something that will continue to unite us for years to come.
